15x10ft cell in Tihar to house Raja

Feb 18, 2011, NEW DELHI: No friends and family members, no personalsecurity guards, no visits to the constituency or Parliament, no files and most importantly, no CBI officers around. This is how life is going to be for former telecom minister A Raja from Thursday in Asia’s biggest jail, among 12,000 criminals.
Raja, who has been lodged in the high security Jail No.1, will have to spend his time in a 15×10 ft cell alone and will have to follow the strict prison manual. “There is no VIP treatment in Tihar jail for anyone,” said Neeraj Kumar, director general (prisons).
Raja is not the only MP to be lodged in Tihar in connection with a scam or a criminal case. Shibu Soren, Madhu Koda, Babu Bhai Katara, Pappu Yadav and several others have passed through Tihar. The only politician presently lodged in Tihar is former Congress leader Romesh Sharma.
Raja’s private secretary R K Chandolia and former telecom secretary Sidhartha Behura are lodged in a separate cell in Tihar.
The only luxury granted to Raja is that he can get home cooked food and books to read. “There will be no late sleeping hours for the former minister and public meetings. He will have to wake up at 6 am along with other inmates. Then, there is breakfast of tea and bread, if he takes it. His lunch and dinner will come from home which he will have to take on time at 12 noon and dinner between 7-8 pm. Like others, he will have to go back to his cell at 10 pm,” said a jail official.
Raja will be in Tihar till March 3, when he will produced in court.
