Telangana Committee next week: Chidambaram
Telangana Committee next week: Chidambaram
Home
Minister P Chidambaram announced on Thursday that a committee on Telangana would be formed in a week.
“We are sticking to our word. We will have the names more or less finalised by the end of this week and perhaps by early next week, you will have the committee announced,” Chidambaram said.
The political representatives from Telangana had set January 28 as the deadline for the Centre to announce a timeframe for the formation of the new state. And they had threatened to resign enmasse in case Centre failed to keep its promise. The Centre’s latest move comes as if to pre-empt the mass resignations.
Congress representatives from Telangana claim the announcement is a definite move forward but the other members of the political Joint Action Committee (JAC) are far from impressed.
“Today’s statement is not at all to our satisfaction. We expected a statement that would clearly indicate a timeframe for formation of Telangana. On 29th, the people’s representatives should submit their resignations and declare non-cooperation. That programme stands,” said Professor Kodandaram, Convenor, Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC).
Chidambaram, in the meeting with political parties from Andhra Pradesh on January 5, had said that its agenda was to “deliberate on the mechanism and lay down a road map for consultations” on the Telangana issue.
The meeting followed Chidambaram’s statement on December 23, 2009 when the government put on back burner the formation of the separate state for which it had on December 9, 2009 promised to initiate the process.
On law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh, the Home Minister said much of the agitation has cooled down while there are some protests here and there.
“My greatest regret is that a couple of students reportedly committed suicide. That, I think, should have been completely avoided. Why should children commit suicide. Parents, teachers have responsibility to stop this. But keeping that apart, by and large, things are peaceful there. There is no major law and order violation. We are sticking to our words,” he said.
Delhi Metro to introduce additional train on Dwarka line
Delhi Metro to introduce additional train on Dwarka line
Delhi Metro today introduced one additional train on the Dwarka Line, the “most heavily crowded” line in the new age transport system.
With this, the number of trains on the Dwarka Sector-9 to Noida City Centre/Anand Vihar, have increased to 43.
“This line is the most heavily crowded line and is also the longest line in operation at present carrying 48 per cent of the total ridership on the Metro system,” a DMRC spokesperson said.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which had 41 trains at the time of inauguration of the Anand Vihar extension on 7th January, added one additional train on 18th January.
With the introduction of today’s train, the DMRC will be able to run seventy eight additional train trips between Yamuna Bank and Dwarka everyday with thirty nine of these trips running further up to Noida City Centre and the remaining thirty nine trips going till Anand Vihar as only alternate trains go towards these two destinations after Yamuna Bank.
The introduction of this additional train will enable DMRC to reduce congestion on Line-3/4 as over ninety thousand persons will be accommodated everyday on these seventy eight trips, the spokesperson said.
It is expected that a further additional train will be added in another 10 days to further ease the traffic.
Normalcy returning to Lalgarh : WB govt
With the operations by security forces entering the fifth day on Wednesday to reclaim areas taken over by Maoist-backed tribals at Lalgarh in West Midnapore district, the West Bengal govt on Wednesday said that the situation was returning to normal.
“I think the situation is returning to normal in Lalgarh. I have talked to the local people. I have heard their grievances. I feel if we all work together, normalcy will return soon,” West Bengal Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakraborty told newsmen at a helipad next to the Lalgarh police station.
Asked how long the operations would continue, Chakraborty said, “The forces are here. It will depend on them and their commanders. It is not for me to comment on.”
Posed with the same question, IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said “the operations are on.”
Asked why the operations did not appear to be visible, Kanojia said “We are not conducting operations to make it visible to you.”
With six truckloads of rice arriving, the chief secretary said from Thursday, besides rice, dal and potatoes would be provided free to displaced villagers and in relief camps for which the Block Developmetn Officer has been given instructions.
Maoists, Chakraborty said, were trying to pressurise the villagers to stay away from relief camps and rice distribution centres.
“I talked to the local people and asked them to defeat the designs of the Maoists,” Chakraborty said.
During the visit of the chief secretary, who arrived by helicopter, thousands of people queued up at the BDO’s office for receiving six kilos of rice each.
“The people of the area suffered a lot. You can make out that they are in great difficulty,” he said, adding that, people sought jobs, beside food and resumption of transport services.
“Development activities must be started as soon as possible. The prerequisite is to restore confidence in the law and order system. Maoists did not allow government offices, police and ration shops to function. We are trying to restore this,” he said.
Asked for a time frame, he said, “It’s difficult to give any time frame as we have to deal with the villagers who are not our enemies. We have to take them into confidence. It is not possible to give any schedule.”
Asked about the alleged harassment by police, the chief secretary said that the forces have been repeatedly warned not to indulge in activity that might harm villagers.
“The state and central forces have arrived in the interest of villagers and not against them. This must be kept in mind by all,” the chief secretary said.
“There is no rift with villagers. Today also I told them to be very cautious in dealing with villagers.”
Chakraborty also said, “if we get definite information or complaints, we will take strong action.”
Asked if lack of development had led to the agitation by tribals, he said, “if certain sections did not deliver, this is not the way to press demands.
“Killing doctors and nurses, is it protest?” he asked referring to the blowing up of an ambulance in Belpahari by the Maoists in the district in November last year when a doctor and nurse were killed.
“Anyway, we are trying to start with a clean slate.”
The chief secretary, accompanied by DGP (Coordination) arrived after visiting adjoining Purulia and Bankura districts.
In Lalgarh he held a meeting at the BDO’s office with officials and visited the CRPF camp at Ramkrishna Vidyapeeth.
Chakraborty also went to the block hospital and met patients.
He said that health services were being augmented and the hospital would have an air-conditioned ward with 12 beds.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had instructed for augmenting health services, he said.

India on Tuesday slammed Pakistan over the release of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohd Saeed, the prime accused in the Mumbai attack, saying it demonstrated Islamabad’s lack of seriousness in its commitment to bring to justice the perpetrators of the carnage.
“It is a commentary on the commitment of Pakistan to investigate the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack,” Home Minister P Chidambaram said here while reacting to Saeed’s release from detention in Lahore.
“We are unhappy that Pakistan does not show the degree of seriousness and commitment that it should to bring to justice perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attack,” he told reporters when asked to comment on the development.
He, however, underlined that the development will not cause any setback to India’s investigations into the attack.
Saeed was put under house arrest on December 11 last year after the UN Security Council banned JUD, declaring it a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is blamed by India for the November 26 Mumbai attacks.
India feels that Pakistan did not press any strong charges against Saeed enabling the Lahore High Court to set him free.
Rly station ransacked, 3 train set on fire in Bihar
Incensed over Railway’s decision to withdraw stoppage of several trains at Khusrupur station in Bihar, angry locals on Monday ransacked the station and attacked three trains including the Intercity Express and uprooted rail lines under Danapur division, about 32 km from Patna. The trains which were attacked were Vikramshila Express, Patna-Rajgir Express and Danapur-Jainagar Express.
As the protests turned violent, the Railway Board withdrew the order cancelling train halts. In a statement, the Board said that trains will continue to stop at designated stations.
Most of the train stops were introduced by former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav.
Earlier, hundreds of people from nearby villages stormed the Khusrupur railway station Monday morning, ransacked the station and burnt it down, according to Deputy Superintendent of Government Railway Police (Patna East) Rajendra Singh.
They were protesting the East Central Railway’s announcement in newspapers pertaining to withdrawal of stoppage of several express trains, including Rajgir-New Delhi Shramajivi Express and Kosi Express, at Khusrupur.
Locals also attacked the 3226 down Danapur-Jainagar Intercity Express at Baikatpur village near the station, and torched its three bogies– two general coaches and an air conditioned chair car, Singh said.
They also uprooted the railway lines in a stretch of several meters under Danapur division of East Central railway.
Fire tenders fought for hours to douse the flames, Singh said.
The mob also destroyed several electronic and other railway operation equipment and signal system, besides the ticket booking counter, Singh said.
Reinforcements were sent to Khusrupur station to control the situation, he said.
Senior railway and police officials have reached the spot and patrolling was intensified as tension ran high in the area, Singh added.

LTTE chief Prabhakaran’s body found
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Velupillai Prabhakaran has been shot dead by the Lankan troops, the Sri Lankan army has said.
The LTTE chief’s body has also been found by the Lankan army, which has identified the body.
Following the reports of Prabhakaran’s death, the police bandobast has been stepped up in Chennai.
PTI adds:
Prabhakaran and his top aides came out of their last hiding place in a small convoy of van and an ambulance and tried to drive out of the war zone, but were gunned down, he said.
The Tiger chief was killed with two others, who are yet to be identified but believed to be his closest associates - LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Sea Tigers’ chief Soosoi.
The deaths of the top LTTE leaders came a day after Tamil Tigers conceded defeat saying the decades-old battle has reached its “bitter end” and they have decided to “silence” their guns.
Earlier on Monday morning, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara had said that Prabhakarn was still alive but completely encircled by advancing Sri Lankan forces in a tiny jungle area north of Vellamullivaikkal after most of the LTTE’s top leaders were found killed.
The army said that its special forces had encircled Prabhakaran, Pottu Aman and Soosoi who were boxed into a 100m x 100m area.
