JK highway reopens for one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar

The 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway– only road link between Kashmir and rest of the country, was reopened for one way traffic on Wednesday, two days after it was closed due to landslides and flash floods.

“The highway has been reopened for one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar this morning after partial clearance of landslide,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) National Highway, Kifayat Haider said.

Over stranded 600 vehicles, including 300 Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and 300 trucks, have moved so far, he said, adding that other stranded vehicles are also being cleared.

“All the Srinagar-bound traffic would be cleared by this evening,” the SSP said.

Over 1,600 vehicles were stranded on the highway due to the blockade. The highway was closed for traffic as a portion of the road was washed away at Kunfur nallah in Chanderkote area of Ramban district due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains on the intervening night of 13th February.

Also snowfall around Jawahar tunnel and landslides at Digdole and Panthal had stalled traffic on the road.

The highway was partially re-opened on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, inter-district highway of Batote-Doda-Kishtwar is still closed due to the landslide triggered by the rains at DrabShalla for the third day on Wednesday. However, Rajouri-Poonch highway was reopened for traffic on Wednesday as landslide was cleared, they said.
